South Texas is a region of the U.S. state of Texas that lies roughly south of, or beginning at, San Antonio. The southern and western boundary is the Rio Grande River, and to the east it is the Gulf of Mexico. The population of this region is about 3.7 million. The southern portion of this region is often referred to as the Rio Grande Valley. The eastern portion along the Gulf of Mexico is also referred to as the Coastal Bend.

Boundaries

There is no defined northern boundary, although it is believed to be at the city of San Antonio and from an east to west line extending from the Rio Grande near Maverick County to the Gulf of Mexico, but turning southeast at or near Lavaca County, and continuing towards the Gulf of Mexico to separate it from East Texas and Southeast Texas. The Rio Grande serves as the western and southern boundaries and separates Texas from Mexico. The eastern portion of South Texas is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico.

Where to look for landscape plants for south Texas?
Q. I need information of collored foliage plants for South Texas.
Asked by Karazina - Wed Mar 21 13:34:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hello from Houston. Azaleas do well here, Carolina Jasmine blooms beautifully in February, and the Tulip trees are also real show stoppers and don't get too big. Indian Hawthorne is a shrub that can take the horrible summer heat but will be in bloom in March. Sago palms make beautiful accent plants, and bouganvilla is a burst of color alll summer long. Hibiscus' colorful blooms come in all hues. I have a rain tree in my back yard, and it blooms a beautiful fiery orange in the fall. And , of course, you'll see a crepe myrtle just about everywhere. Beautiful and low maintenance. One of the best book investments you can make is to buy Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening. Good luck and have fun !!

What is it like living in South Texas, husbands going to be working there as a Border Patrol Agent?
Q. My husband has a job with the as a border patrol agent and upon his graduation from the academy we'll be moving to south texas, either the Brownville area or around El Paso. What is it like living down there(im from Ohio) I know border towns are nasty so is there nice place to live say 45 mins away? Also Im taking my horses with me, do you think I'll have a hard time finding a place to keep them?

A. No you shouldn't have a problem finding a place to board your horses. You may even find a house to buy or rent with enough property to keep them there. It's very, very hot in both of the towns you named. A large % of the population is Hispanic, so you'll hear people speaking Spanish all the time. You're in for a huge change being from Ohio. It's nothing like the big cities of Texas -- Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, Austin, San Antonio. Good luck.
