In the pieta mary is shown as holding the body of Jesus on her laps.Is it possible for a woman of her age?
Q. to do so?

A. Well we know that Mary was present at the crucifixion of Her Son and I see no reason why She could not have cradled His lifeless body as depicted in the Pieta, Jesus was 33yrs old and Mary was possibly no more than 16 yrs older, so give or take She was around 50yrs old,not to old to have held Her Son at all. God bless.

A. The Pieta is carved out of Carrera marble. Carrera is a location in Italy that has lots of marble, and is considered by many as the best and the most beautiful mable in the world. Michelangelo went there himself, and harvested the marble himself. It is a very tedious process, because it had to be scored, (meaning determining the dimensions) and then it had to be removed, that took great skill not to break the block, and once it was removed from the mountain, it had to be dropped to the ground and placed on a cart, and carried off to the location where the carving would take place. A. Cardinal Jean de Billheres commissioned it. Artists in Michelangelo's time worked to commission (that is, they were asked to make things by clients, and were paid for it). They never made a thing and then looked for a customer That was Michelangelo's 'influence'. There are a number of articles about it on the internet - why not start off with the wikipedia ones and then work your way down.

Michelangelo carved it when he was 24 years old, and it is the only one he ever signed. The beauty of its lines and expression leaves 1asting impression on everyone. With this magnificent statue Michelangelo has given us a highly spiritual and Christian view of human suffering. Artists before and after Michelangelo always depicted the Virgin with the dead Christ in her arms as griefstricken, almost on the verge of desperation. A. One interesting fact about the Pieta is that it is the only work Michelangelo ever did that he signed. Michelangelo's Pieta was sculpted from marble and is currently located in St. Peter s Basilica. In 1498 Michelangelo received a commission from a Roman Cardinal asking if he could create a statue of the Mary clothed, with the dead Christ in her arms, and life size. Two years later, when the work was completed, the critics exclaimed it was a masterpiece.

A. No. I don't know where you'd get such a preposterous idea. I can't make the following point any more prominent: Catholics do not worship anyone or anything else other than the One True God that exists in the form of the Holy Trinity. While we certainly do give much honor to Mary and the Saints, this is not to be confused with worship. To clear up this misconception, consider this scenario: What do you do during the National Anthem? All Americans are encouraged to stand, facing the flag, remove their hats, put their hand to their heart, and recite the words as they are sung. However, this certainly isn't worship, is it? Why did people in the Renaissance use marble for sculptures?
Q. I'm doing a project about art from the Renaissance. And I'm giving information about Michelangelo's Pieta. I would like to know why he used marble and how does the Pieta sculpture relate to the time of the Italian Renaissance?
Asked by Captain Mochico - Wed Sep 2 19:49:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Italian Renaissance was located within a few miles of some of the finest marble in the world, everyone worked in it and people buying stuff expected it to be in marble. Marble does a wonderful skin tone and depending on how it is finished has a variety of textures, even when pretty smooth that make it look softer than it is.

A. There is no great demand for memorial coins by collectors. If your coin has truly 1/2 ounce of silver (actual silver weight) then it is worth about $10, based on todays spot price for silver.

A. First, Michelangelo, not how you wrote it. The pieta is a sculpture of Jesus and his mother, Mary. I believe the block of marble that it was carved from was passed around from artist to artist and none of them could figure out how to work it until it came to Michelangelo and he saw the sculpture of Jesus and Mary within it. This sculpture is a unique depiction of Jesus and Mary because it depicts Jesus as a grown man but Mary is large and carrying him. Instead of the typical depictions of the two of them after the crucifixion where she is a weak mother crying over her son, she is a (very) large protective mother, strong and carrying him.

A. I assume this is a hypothetical question because - if you are referring to Michaelangelo's famous Pieta - it has not been stolen from the Vatican, it has not been damaged with a chainsaw, it is bloody huge and made of marble and would be impossible to take anywhere and, moreover, it is behind a bloody great slab of bullet-proof glass. Also, there was no queen of France last time I checked. This story grows fishier and fishier.
