A. Well, Mona Lisa is in the Louvre, David in Florence, and Pieta in St. Peter's Basilica. I've no problem with the Church keeping them. Michelangelo was commissioned many times by the Church to do great works of art for them, including the designing of the uniform for the Swiss guards. Pieta was once hacked to pieces by a madman, and I know after it was restored, the statue was placed behind a bulletproof glass shield.

A. The Peita by Michelangelo is at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It depicts The Virgin Mary mourning and holding her dead son in her arms after he has been brought down from the cross. Throughout the ages copies of this sculpture have been made and other artists have made their own versions of it. I don't know of anyone who "worships" this representation of Mother and Son. I have however, prayed at the foot of this sculpture and meditated on Christ's death by contemplating such wondrous piece of art.

A. Magdalen by Donatello Perseus by Cellini David by Verrocchio Unless you want only pieta art? A "pieta" is a depiction of Mary holding the body of Jesus after his death. There were many pieta's done during the early renaissance, and the high renaissance as well. It was a popular theme...if you do want only pietas to compare to Michaelangelo's, then try these... Giovanni Della Robbia (not a sculpture, a glazed terra cotta) Baccio Bandinelli Gregorio Fernandez (Spanish sculptor, 1600's, for an interesting comparison across country/cultural lines)

A. La Pieta is on St. Peter's Basilica. From Fiumicino you need to take Leonardo Express to Termini and there you can take subway Linea A to "Ottaviano-San Pietro". Stop at Ottaviano San pietro and walk in direction of Basilica (is not so far from subway). In Rome there are also interneet cafe.

Michelangelo s pieta?
Q. Im writing an essay on the story and Inspiration of Michelangelo s pieta, I need some help or leads or something PLEASE!!!
Asked by mouse322 - Wed Jun 24 12:39:18 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just give his life background (relevant parts) and then talk about why you think the Pieta is so famous, the delicacy or the detail and folds of the clothes and the brilliant proportion and the extent of the emotion displayed. You could also mention his other Pietas, if that doesn't stray too much from the point.

A. First, Michelangelo, not how you wrote it. The pieta is a sculpture of Jesus and his mother, Mary. I believe the block of marble that it was carved from was passed around from artist to artist and none of them could figure out how to work it until it came to Michelangelo and he saw the sculpture of Jesus and Mary within it. This sculpture is a unique depiction of Jesus and Mary because it depicts Jesus as a grown man but Mary is large and carrying him. Instead of the typical depictions of the two of them after the crucifixion where she is a weak mother crying over her son, she is a (very) large protective mother, strong and carrying him.

Which of the world's cathedrals is the most impressive?
Q. Salisbury has a magnificent history, and holds a 700-year-old Magna Carta, founding document of modern democracy. Winchester has a Roman wall, what purports to be the fabled round table of King Arthur and the knights of Camelot, and the grave of Jane Austen. Ely stands out from a vast plain and is not overshadowed by modern tall buildings, as most cathedrals are. Canterbury has history dating back to St. Augustine, 602 AD, and the history of Thomas Becket, the scene of his assassination marked by crossed swords. St. Peter's has the paintings of Michelangelo, and the Pieta. Santa Sophia has roots in the Byzantine Empire. The Blue Mosque was a Christian cathedral until about 1453. A. Ive seen evidence in my life with prayer dealing nature and I know from experience that god prepares our hearts for the things to come. I think god knows what we are going to pray before we pray. The farmers have to know how much to sell and how much to keep in olden times, I think god is really working in that department.
